Lutheran Health Services is the Health Ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea. Lutheran Health Services Morobe Region is the biggest region of all the three regions (including Highlands, MASE and Morobe-Secretary) under Lutheran Health Services. Morobe Region has a total of 35 health facilities, which comprises two hospitals, two health centres, 12 sub health centres, four community health posts, 13 aid posts and two urban clinics. Most of these health facilities are in the most rural areas where health and other government service accessibility are a problem.

Use of these birthing kits reduces the chances of babies developing infection after delivery, providing for clean and safe deliveries, which reduces the chance of infant death. This is why the birthing kits are so important and helpful for mothers living in the most remote and rural areas.

From the 2023 shipment, some 750 birthing kits will be distributed to the following Health Facilities: Braun District Hospital; Etep Rural Hospital; Wagezaring Health Centre; Kwaplalim Health Centre; Lablab Health Centre; Torowa Sub Health Centre; Mindik Sub Health Centre; Tawa Sub Health Centre; Kapo Sub Health Centre; Yalumet Sub Health Centre; Zaka Sub Health Centre; Makini Sub Health Centre; Ten City Urban Clinic; Watut Sub Health Centre.

Due to lack of easily accessible road services, some areas in Papua New Guinea are difficult to deliver the birthing kits to. There is a day’s walk to deliver the kits to Makini Sub Health Centre. Yalumet Sub Health Centre is only accessible by plane, while a Mindik and Wagezaring Health Centres in the Finschhafen District are by road. Regardless, the Lutheran Health Services are doing all we can to ensure these areas receive the birthing kits.

As a representative of the Lutheran Health Services Morobe Region and on behalf of the delivering mothers in Papua New Guinea, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed towards the distribution of the birthing kits. I greatly appreciate the women of Australia who were the donors of these birthing kits. I would like to give a special thank you to Australia and Ampo Special Projects Office for the well coordination given to the work.
