Bishop Giegere Wenge of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG) greeted Synod with a reminder of God’s promise to Isaiah of the power of this word:

‘As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it’ (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Bishop Wenge brought greetings to the LCA on behalf of the 1.3 million members of ELCPNG, which celebrated its 125th anniversary two years ago.

ELCPNG traces its origins back to the work of missionary Johannes Flierl, who was involved in mission in South Australia and Queensland before he began work in Papua New Guinea in 1886.

‘We share common ground in the international community’, Bishop Wenge said.

‘May God graciously love, protect and bless this church; may he send workers to the LCA and ELCPNG.

‘We need to send more missionaries to meet the needs of people to hear the gospel before Jesus comes. The gospel has the power to save those who believe.’
