President of Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Bishop of Jordan and the Holy Land Rev Dr Munib Younan made his first official visit to Australia as a guest of the LCA and Lutheran Education Australia (LEA) from 25 September to 3 October.

Bishop Younan was invited to deliver the opening keynote address at the fourth Australian Conference on Lutheran Education (ACLE) and held a number of public and private engagements in Adelaide and Brisbane.

In Adelaide Bishop Younan spoke to an audience of more than 80 people at Australian Lutheran College and met privately with both Bishop of the LCA Rev John Henderson and President of the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly Rev Prof Andrew Dutney.

In Brisbane Bishop Younan preached at St Peter’s Lutheran Church, Indooroopilly, on Sunday, 29 September, before participating in a public dialogue. He then met representatives of other Australian churches over a private lunch.

Six educators from Papua New Guinea travelled to Brisbane as guests of ACLE, thanks to the partnership between the LCA and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, funded by the Adrienne Jericho Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The six came from primary schools and high schools in Lae, Mount Hagen and Madang. In Brisbane they were supported by volunteer program assistants Ruth and Colin Hayter.

On his second Australian visit this year, LWF (Indonesia) National Committee Education secretary Ridwin Purba was accompanied at ACLE by LWF Executive Assistant Basa Hutabarat, teacher Elwin Piarawan Zebua and school principal Mangantan Napitupulu.

Attending from the United States were Executive Director of the Lutheran Education Association Dr Jonathan Laabs and Professor of Music Dr Rich Fischer from Concordia University, River Forest Illinois.
