The people of the Lutheran churches in Papua New Guinea (PNG) hold a special place in the hearts of many LCA/NZ members. In fact, our history cannot be fully told without constant reference to our mission partnership in PNG and the many LCA people who have served there since 1886.

What began as a mother-child relationship has matured and we now work together joyfully in mission as sister churches.

Despite the enormous growth of the church in PNG, there remains vital work to be done reaching people with the good news of Jesus. We don’t have so many people on the ground these days but the crucial work of missionaries continues.

Our own Mick Hauser is one of a number of ex-pat teaching staff working with local lecturers at the three seminaries in PNG. Other missionary staff lead Bible translation projects, tend the medical needs of those who are suffering and assist in church administration. Every area of service helps the gospel to get to the ears of the people.

Despite romanticised ideas of mission based on exploits of people from another age,  most often missionaries are doing the ordinary things of life – teaching the faith, caring for neighbours, overseeing work funded by partners, managing finances and engaging in administration.

There are currently two such ‘ordinary-looking’ positions vacant in PNG in finance and project management, which urgently need filling. These roles are vital for the mission of the church in PNG and intimately connected to the coal-face work of those reaching out with the love of Jesus.

Could God be calling you to join the rich history of the LCA in mission in PNG? Or could he be encouraging you to tap someone on the shoulder to consider this life-changing opportunity to serve?

Missionaries don’t only carry bibles. Some carry laptops and spreadsheets too.
