In November 2025, the Lutheran Church of Myanmar (LCM) marked 25 years of faithful witness and service, giving thanks to God for a quarter of a century of ministry in a predominantly Buddhist nation shaped by political upheaval, conflict, and profound social change.

Founded in January 2000, the Lutheran Church of Myanmar has grown steadily in faith, maturity, and mission. From its beginnings as a small Lutheran presence, the church now comprises around 2,000 members, 17 pastors, 10 congregations, and three preaching stations, serving communities across the country.

LCM is one of four Lutheran World Federation (LWF) member churches in Myanmar, working closely with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Myanmar, the Mara Evangelical Church, and the Myanmar Lutheran Church through the Federation of Lutheran Churches in Myanmar. Together, these churches bear witness to Christ through worship, service, and accompaniment in often challenging circumstances.

The silver jubilee was celebrated with a worship service on 1 November 2025, bringing together pastors, church members, and ecumenical partners for thanksgiving and prayer. Reflecting on the anniversary theme, “God is good and his steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 100:5), LCM President Rev. Martin Lalthangliana spoke of “gratitude and hope” as defining marks of the church’s journey.

As part of the celebrations, LCM published a special anniversary booklet featuring testimonies from congregations across the country, highlighting stories of faith, perseverance, and community life formed around Word and Sacrament.

Despite limited resources and ongoing instability in Myanmar, the Lutheran Church of Myanmar continues to sustain a broad range of ministries, including:

  • Youth programs and Sunday school
  • Women’s fellowship and leadership development
  • Theological education and pastoral formation
  • Diaconal and social welfare initiatives
  • Community support for families affected by disaster, displacement, and poverty

The church has been particularly committed to supporting children from marginalised communities, strengthening access to education and offering practical support in times of crisis. This witness reflects the Lutheran understanding of faith active in love, where the proclamation of the Gospel is inseparable from serving neighbours in need.

The Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand, through LCA International Mission, has long valued its partnership in Myanmar. Alongside other LWF partners, LCA‑IM supports theological capacity building, leadership formation, and accompaniment of Lutheran churches in Myanmar through regional collaboration and scholarships.

Twenty‑five years on, the Lutheran Church of Myanmar continues to proclaim Christ with courage and humility, trusting God’s enduring love in the midst of uncertainty. Its story is one of steady faithfulness, lived out quietly in worshipping communities and boldly expressed through service to neighbours.

As the church steps into its next chapter, we pray that God will strengthen its pastors and leaders, deepen its witness, and sustain its ministry for generations to come.

Many of our partner churches are working in new territory for the kingdom of God; therefore, spiritual attack is their everyday reality. As a member of a congregation, school, or family, or a couple or individual, you are invited to commit to praying for our partners in mission.
