Renewing Christian Life Studies in PNG

The school bell rings and sixty students squeeze into a single room. Desks are shared, light filters through louvres that no longer close properly, and the only “devices” in sight are well‑worn exercise books and stubby pencils. Yet in classrooms like these, Lutheran teachers across Papua New Guinea (PNG) continue to show extraordinary faithfulness. Day after day, they open God’s word with their students, speak hope into difficult circumstances, and help shape character for life.

Christian Studies taught in the Lutheran schools plays a vital role in forming young people in PNG. In communities facing significant social, economic, and cultural pressures, Lutheran schools draw on the Christian Life Studies (CLS) Rainbow Curriculum to ground children in God’s story of creation, redemption, and new life. Through regular engagement with Scripture, students learn to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and compassion, shaped by the assurance of God’s grace. They grow in the understanding that every person is created in God’s image and is deeply loved, valued, and worthy of dignity.

To help students understand the depth of Jesus’ love, teachers need resources that are practical, accessible, and shaped for their environment. While the existing CLS Rainbow Curriculum is theologically sound, it no longer meets the realities of expanding class sizes, increasing reporting requirements, and extremely limited classroom resources. In response, the Education Division of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG) is undertaking a significant update of the CLS Rainbow Curriculum to ensure it stays biblically grounded, age‑appropriate, and genuinely workable in the everyday context of PNG classrooms.

The revised materials will offer a simple and consistent structure, with clear learning goals and activities that can be delivered without specialised equipment. Lutheran doctrine, the story of God’s saving work in Christ, and the life of the church will be woven throughout the curriculum, helping students understand not only what Christians believe but the biblical and confessional foundations behind those beliefs. Lessons will also guide children to practice Christian values of kindness, honesty, and service within their families, schools, and communities, which reflects the Lutheran conviction that faith expresses itself in love for others. Every suggested activity included in the CLS Rainbow Curriculum will be designed with limited materials and large groups in mind, ensuring learning is achievable even without the technology many classrooms in Australia take for granted.

To strengthen classroom engagement, the updated teacher’s guides will incorporate interactive, low‑cost teaching methods such as storytelling, role‑play, discussion, drawing, and reflection. These approaches will help teachers connect Scripture with daily life and make Christian education come alive for students. Alongside the new resources, ongoing teacher training and mentoring will support each stage of the rollout so that the curriculum is not only distributed but used with confidence. Workshops will equip teachers in faith‑based pedagogy and strategies suited to large classes and diverse learning needs.

If you would like to support this work, your contribution will help print and distribute the CLS Rainbow Curriculum guides throughout PNG, deliver essential teacher workshops and follow‑up mentoring, all of which is vital because, despite steady progress in writing and development, the production and delivery of these materials across the country (often via rugged roads, river crossings, or small aircraft) continues to require reliable, ongoing funding.

Every classroom deserves resources that honour the gospel and are realistic for the local context. By supporting the CLS Rainbow Curriculum, you help equip PNG teachers to open the Bible with confidence, nurture Christ‑like character in their students, and teach young people about the enduring hope we have in Jesus Christ.
